Joseph Lewinger was a tireless champion for the TMLA community. His versatility ranged from history to economics, from athletics to culture, and in every arena, he gave his all to nurture our students’ dreams and spur their achievements. A self-described “Woman of Dignity,” he promoted the empowerment of women and supported our students as they expanded their intellectual and personal horizons.

He was a kind, larger-than-life man who lifted spirits with his beaming smile and sense of humor, a loving husband who tucked daily notes into his wife Maura’s lunch box, and a devoted father whose love for his three children, Madison, Jack, and Maeve, lit his life. He was viewed as a second father to students who benefited from his caring counsel. He made all of us feel as though we were the most important person in the room.
The inaugural J. Lew Memorial 5K Run began in 2021 in memory of Joe "J. Lew" Lewinger, who passed away in March of 2020 from COVID-19. Joe was a beloved faculty member at TMLA for almost 20 years. He served as a Social Studies teacher, Athletic Director and eventually as Assistant Principal of Student Life. He, himself, was full of life and poured his heart and soul into our TMLA community.

Our J. Lew Memorial 5K is in support of the TMLA Athletics Department, which Joe helped establish as the largest all-girls program in New York City.

On April 27, 2024, our Student-Athletes, as well as the broader TMLA community, will participate in the 4th Annual J. Lew Memorial 5K Run. Click the button below to register for our in-person or virtual race, or to make a donation.
