TMLA Christmas Tree Lighting

Rachel Iovine welcomed students and faculty as well as parents of Sam Harris who joined the group for the ceremony of Christmas Tree lighting.

“This year, we come together not only to celebrate this Christmas Season, but to celebrate the life and memory of our dear friend and classmate, Sam Harris. This tree lighting is more than a holiday tradition—it is a symbol of the love, light, and joy that Sam brought into our lives. Though Sam is no longer with us, her spirit continues to shine brightly in our hearts. Tonight, we honor her memory and the beautiful impact Sam had on all of us.”

Abigail Roy told us that several times throughout the Bible, we are reminded of the light that God shares with us.  From the Book of Isaiah: “The Lord will arise upon you, and His glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising."

January Jernigan read from John’s Gospel: “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Catherine O’Neill read from Matthew’s Gospel: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

After the singing of “Silent Night”, Gianna Eriquez provided  a Student Reflection.

Avery Morgan then asked that the tree become a symbol:

“As we light this tree tonight, named A Star for Sam, we are reminded that Jesus is the light of the world, shining brightly even in the darkest of times. Let this tree be a symbol of that light and a reminder to spread kindness, love, and hope to all. Let it also shine bright this Advent season in remembrance of our dear friend and classmate Sam. “

Caitlin O’Malley led the closing prayer:

“Loving God, As we light this tree, we celebrate the joy and hope of the Christmas season. May its glow remind us of the light of Christ, shining in our hearts and in the world.  Bless our TMLA community with love, peace, and unity as we prepare to welcome the birth of Your Son.

May this tree stand as a symbol of the faith and warmth that bind us together, and may its light guide us to share kindness and compassion with all we meet. Amen.”

As the group counted down for the moment all had been waiting for, they were asked: “Let’s think of the ways we can spread happiness and love in our community, especially during this Christmas season.”

The ceremony closed with the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
