Throughout the month of February, we celebrated Black History Month with a series of engaging and educational events. The Black Student Union created informative displays showcasing influential figures and pivotal moments in Black history, as well as collaborated with our Art students in creating art based on research of African masks and traditional art objects from Nigeria, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone & Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and more. The students artwork has been displayed throughout the building since the beginning of the month.
Our students held their annual bake sale to raise money for Pencils of Promise, an international education non-profit organization that creates educational opportunities for all children. specifically in Ghana, Guatemala, and Laos. Our current TMLA students chose Pencils of Promise to support one of our own, Kailee Scales '93, CEO of Pencils of Promise, and because they believe in everything this organization stands for.
In addition to the artwork and bake sales, some of our BSU members created a Diversity Wall where they shared foods, traditions, and how they celebrate their Black history.
Be sure to take a look through the pictures of the artwork and Diversity wall posters!
