Requiescat in Pace, John Cherry

Born in South Carolina John moved to NY many years ago and had a long career as a Chef for Marriott Hotels. Over 25 years ago John retired from that position not knowing he was soon to embark on a new career, one that would bring him close to the hearts of our TMLA Family.

For almost 25 years John served as a tremendous part of TMLA's heart and soul, bringing incomparable warmth and welcome to our hilltop. Mr. Cherry is of course most fondly remembered as the person who greeted just about every student, parent and faculty member who walked through our doors for the past quarter of a century, with his ubiquitous "Mornin!" and his solicitous care making sure our students and school were safe and secure.

In recognition of John's dedication and service to our family, the Edgerton Boulevard entrance to TMLA, where he stood each morning, will be officially named The John Cherry Entrance.

In 2003 Mr. Cherry was awarded one of TMLA's highest honors, the Peacemaker Award, in recognition of his beautiful life of service to others and his commitment to unity and welcome.

In 2020 Mr. Cherry's dedication to TMLA was recognized in The Tablet newspaper and he was profiled with a spotlight piece on Currents News. In that interview John was asked how he would like to be remembered, his response..."I want to be remembered for being myself and doing my job. I'm just happy that everyone knows me!"

We all know you and we all love you John Cherry. Thank you for all you have been for our TMLA Family. We know, with a certainty rooted in faith, that when you awoke to meet our God, you were greeted with a rousing "Mornin!" and you knew that you were home. Welcome home Mr. Cherry.
